Nestled in the heart of Rabat’s prestigious Souisse neighbourhood is one of the most beautiful small hotels in which one could ever wish to stay. The Villa Mandarine was originally a house built on several acres by a French couple. On what once an orange grove owned by the family, an extensive garden was established and a swimming pool added. 700 orange trees were retained.
As decades passed and family members moved away, a decision was taken to convert the property into a hotel. It opened its doors to guests in 2001.
The property still retains the feel of a large, rambling house. Covered walkways adorned with pots and carpets protect guests from the summer heat. Flower laden Bougainvillea spill over colonnades. Elaborately tiled pathways lead to courtyards in which guests take coffee or an aperitif before dining at the splendid restaurant, a favourite of many visiting dignitaries and politicians.
Rabat is also the home of Paulig’s weaving centre from which Art of Rugs sources its inventory. The centre houses looms specifically designed to accommodate the production of large rugs in custom sizes. Highly skilled weavers work with pure new wool, jute and cotton to produce beautiful textures created by the company’s European design team.
